Beautiful well-aged and supple wine. Complex bouquet of plum, blackberry, raspberry, prune, cedar, eucalyptus, tobacco, anise, smoke, leather, and a hint of cloves. The palate is more red fruit (raspberry and cherry), with the plum, prune, cedar, and tobacco repeating, and subtle cinnamon and vanilla notes emerging. Full-bodied and medium-high acidity. While there is a lot of tannic structure, the mouthfeel is supple and velvety. Long finish. Fantastic bargain.

The Monasterio de Las Vinas 2005, composed of 60% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo and 10% Cariñena that was aged in oak for 24 months, has intense aromas of sour cherry, pine, vanilla and coconut on the nose and sour cherry, dates and coconut on the palate. It is a light to medium bodied, extra-dry, integrated wine, with forward acidity, dusty-refined tannins (decant for 1+ hours) and a medium to long finish. Drink with food; drink now and for the next 3-5 years. My impression: NICE to BEAUTIFUL, 89-90 pts - recommended based on quality. Note: upon opening, the wine is metallic, which dissipates after 15 min; wine achieves 90 score after decanting. Tasted August/13.

Smooth with drying tannins. Spicy and resinous but I am not finding much fruit. Surprisingly light in the middle. But a beautiful wine and lots of character and value.
Dark purple to ruby in colour with a medium intense nose.
A rustic wine that will please a discerning palate
Positives: This wine features sandalwood, sour cherry, pine needles, graphite, forest floor, dry herbs, coconut, black currants, leather, arugula, cocoa & allspice. Medium body with dry tannins, good acidity & a fairly long length.
Negatives: A touch watery on the finish.
Interesting Point: I prefer the 2006 vintage that is $2 cheaper. See my review 9 July 2013.
Drink now or in the next 5 years on its own or pair it with arugula & prosciutto pizza.

A very nice wine straight out of the bottle, this was not as 'dusty' or old as a 2005 was expected to be. It showed nice round, black fruit flavours and finished with slightly dry tannins. A good wine for the price.
