If I Could Buy Only One – April 29 VINTAGES Release

We asked our writers, “If you could buy only one wine from this release, which one would it be and why?”

Domaine Des Terres Dorées Le Ronsay Beaujolais 2021

($19.95, The Living Vine)
John Szabo – Looking for a perfect, versatile red to carry you through the spring-summer-early fall? My only one this week is such a wine, regional great Jean-Paul Brun’s Domaine Des Terres Dorées Le Ronsay Beaujolais 2021. A vibrant and sincere expression, it veers way from what you might consider classic Beaujolais, made from a single plot of the same name 20 year old vines on limestone as opposed to more common granite, hence a bit sharper and leaner. It’s also destemmed (no carbonic maceration) and wild fermented. The net result is a light and juicy, airy feel in the 2021 vintage, a wine of simple pleasures and lively fruit. Go ahead and chill it lightly for maximum refreshment and enjoyment.

Château D'Aquéria Tavel Rosé 2022

($24.95, Noble Estates Wines & Spirits)
Sara d’Amato – If you think rosé, the summer might just come. This Château D’Aquéria Tavel Rosé 2022 is not your pale pink, wispy poolside pink, it is multi-grape blend (both red and white) that the Brits once referred to as a “claret” given its darker hue. The estate employs a complex proprietary process in the creation of their one and only wine from grapes that are grown in cool sandy soils in the largest contiguous vineyard in Tavel. Each red is paired up with a white for co-maceration before fermentation and maturation, never in oak. The result is a generous wine with silky tannins that features an abundance of red fruit and flora that include strawberry, candied cherry, white peach, starfruit, dragon fruit, thyme and rose in the warmer 2022 vintage. Barbecue ready!

Barone Ricasoli Brolio Bettino Chianti Classico 2018

($29.95, The Case for Wine)
Megha Jandhyala – My “Only One” this week is the fragrant and alluring Barone Ricasoli Brolio Bettino Chianti Classico 2018. I find it especially appealing because of its vivid flavours of dark cherries, plump red berries, herbs, and violets and its svelte, supple palate. This Chianti Classico also embodies a bit of history. Not only is it born of a historic estate, but its name is a tribute to Baron Bettino Ricasoli, a renowned politician and wine entrepreneur who is said to have created the recipe for Chianti. It should make for a versatile addition to a dinner party and moreover, has the potential to ignite an interesting conversation or two.

Brigaldara Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2017

($74.95, Rogers & Company)
Michael Godel – Brigaldara is a farm of viticultural and all-around cultural sustainability would and should be the kind of place to turn out a great Amarone from the challenging 2017 vintage. Case in point Brigaldara Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico DOCG 2017. Challenging because of heat and no rain but not so in terms of quality fruit, at least not for the Cesari family. Bigger than 2016 to be sure, warmer and with more developed umami character but still easing into being and showing more than ample freshness. Running no Amarone fever and in fact there is a succulence and a grace, even in such a youthful stage. Will drink beautifully towards the end of the decade.

Giacomo Mori Chianti 2018

($23.95, Connexion Oenophilia)
David Lawrason – I often enjoy Chianti with dinner, and not just with Italian recipes, and I like my Chianti to be somewhat barre bones with its natural acidity carrying the meal and its tart-edged red fruits adding their energy.  This Giacomo Mori Chianti 2018 is just such a wine, and it is priced well. It is a slim, traditional Chianti with typical redcurrant/raspberry fruit among fresh herbs/botanicals, some shrubbiness and mineral – all nicely detailed and combined. It is medium weight, firm and juicy with a slightly sour-edged. Everything fits nicely here. Give it a light chill.
